Unfortunately, prostate cancer has no known cause and therefore prevention is not yet possible. Reductions in dietary fat may be helpful. Improvements in therapy are another route to ultimately improve survival. Presently we have effective and curable therapy for localized cancer (surgery or radiation). There is no known cure for locally advanced or metastatic cancer and early detection is our best tool to improve prostate cancer survival. If we can detect more cancers when they are localized and still confined to the prostate, survival may indeed improve. 70%-80% of cancers detected through screening efforts are confined to the prostate gland.
