Seth
E. Lerner, MD
Director, The Prostate Program
Seth E. Lerner,
MD, a urologist specializing in urologic oncology, is the Director
of the Dickstein Cancer Treatment Center Prostate Program. This state-of-the-art
treatment facility offers several unique diagnostic and therapeutic
opportunities for cancer patients. In addition to cutting edge surgical
techniques and radiotherapy, the Prostate Program offers the Multidisciplinary
Conference. Patients and their families have the opportunity to discuss
their case simultaneously with a urologic oncologist (surgeon), radiation
oncologist and medical oncologist. This novel approach to the cancer
decision-making process and therapy allows men with prostate cancer
to freely interact with all the cancer specialists.
A graduate of the
State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, Dr.
Lerner performed his post-graduate training at Albert Einstein College
of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in New York City, where he was
a resident in urology. He continued his training as a Fellow in Urologic
Oncology at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota.
Dr. Lerner is also
an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Urology at Albert
Einstein College of Medicine. He has received numerous awards throughout
his career and has published over 30 articles in the files of Urologic
Oncology. Dr. Lerner is a consultant reviewer to several medical peer
review journals including the “Journal
of Urology”, “The Mayo Clinic Proceedings” and “Urology”.
He is a member of the American Urological Association, The American Association
of Clinical Urologists, the American Medical Association and the New
York Section American Urological Association, among others.
Dr Lerner
was instrumental in introducing minimimally invasive robotic oncologic
surgery to White Plains Hospital Center. He has performed more robotic
radical prostatectomies utilizing the da Vinci system than any other
surgeon in the county as well as the surrounding counties.
“With the 3-D magnified view, I am more able to precisely identify and
preserve the delicate structures that surround the prostate. This includes the
sphincter muscles, which are responsible for urinary control, plus nerves and
blood vessels, which are responsible for potency during the curative cancer operation.
The same principles that I have used for years during standard open nerve sparing
(for the preservation of sexual function) radical prostatectomy are applied to
the robotic surgery. The da Vinci system is not a replacement for surgical skill
and experience or extensive knowledge and understanding of pelvic anatomy. It
is merely another tool such as an advanced scalpel and microscope that I can
use to perform radical prostatectomy while maintaining the patient’s quality
of life.”
